An employee in this class performs general law enforcement work in the protection of the lives, property and rights of citizens of the County. Serves as an employee to the Sheriff investigating complaints and crimes. Serves legal papers related to the civil process of the law including summons, subpoenas, notices, attachments, claim of delivery, ejectments and executions. Serves warrants and other criminal processes. Answers complaint calls, investigates crime and disturbances, and arrest violators of the law. Patrols highways and roads in the county with a car equipped with a two way radio communication system to contact other officers. Directs traffic at funerals and parades and enforces the law in places of public entertainment. Assist outside agencies, including State and Federal, in investigations. Serves the court as bailiff and prisoner guard. Serves as a witness in court, presenting evidence gathered through investigations. Transports prisoners and patients to various hospital, mental institutions and prisons. Employees are expected to exercise independent judgment and make emergency decisions without consulting higher authority. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Sheriff and is reviewed through daily written reports, conferences, and the general effectiveness of law enforcement in the County.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Compliance with minimum standards for training and certification as set by the State of North Carolina for a Justice Officer: be a citizen of the United States, be at least 21 years of age, be a high school graduate, or the equivalent (GED), and possess a valid NC Driver's License. Must be BLET certified. HIRING PROCESS includes successful completion of a physical assessment, background investigation, polygraph examination, and psychological evaluation.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
